Measuring Air Conditioning performance

When an Air Conditioning (AC) system is not working at its peak, that often becomes apparent in costs and comfort. Sometimes systems continue to provide comfort even when they are poorly maintained, however, although they usually cause higher (hidden) utility costs.

How can air conditioning provide comfort if it is not working at its peak? Once you have set the temperature on your thermostat, for instance, to 69°F, the thermostat will keep the AC unit running until the room reaches that value, regardless of how much time it takes to achieve the desired comfort level.

Does your thermostat know if your air conditioning is working at peak efficiency? If the air conditioner takes 6 hours instead of 3 to cool the room, you probably don't know that, because maybe you are away at work, and even the thermostat doesn't know it. It keeps the air conditioner running wasting energy and doubling the electric bill.

Evaluating whether the air conditioner is working efficiently can be tricky.

Ambient environmental conditions play a critical role when we need to check on the functioning of an AC system. Not just the temperature, but also humidity should be a major consideration in AC unit performance. When outside humidity is very high, the AC system expends most of its effort wringing the moisture out of the air.

For instance, because local weather conditions are different, the same air conditioner will perform differently in Philadelphia, PA, than in Phoenix, AZ.

Taking environmental parameters into consideration will help you to get an accurate and reliable AC diagnosis.

When does air conditioning not run at peak efficiency?

The most common air conditioning problem is refrigerant leaks, which can contribute to serious environmental issues, like global warming.

Other common problems with existing air conditioners result from faulty installation, poor service procedures, and inadequate maintenance.

Many times, the refrigerant charge (the amount of refrigerant in the system) does not match the manufacturer's specifications. If proper refrigerant charging is not performed during installation, or refrigerant charge is low due to a leak, the performance and efficiency of the unit is impaired.

The performance and efficiency of your air conditioner is greatest when the refrigerant charge exactly matches the manufacturer's specification, and is neither undercharged nor overcharged.
